NASAs Curiosity rover has discovered brand-new evidence that Mars once had ponds on its surface, in the form of silt fissures on the surfaceoriginating in an evaporated lake.
The rover did the finding on a rock-and-roll slabcalled Old Soaker in December 2016, in the lower various regions of Mount Sharp in Gale Crater, which the rover is currently stirring its method up. If established, these “wouldve been” firstly mud fissures, or desiccation fissures, found by the rover.
“Even from great distances, we could see a decoration of four- and five-sided polygons[ setting 1 to 2 centimetersacross] that don’t look like fractures we’ve watched previously with Curiosity, ” Nathan Stein, a grad student at Caltech in California who led the investigation, said in a statement. “It consider this to be what you’d watch beside the road where muddy sand has dried and cracked.”
This isnt the first manifestation Curiosity has met for ancient liquid water. It has previously discovered what appears to be an ancient stream bed, withsmoothed pebbles that seem to have been rounded by ocean. Rock blankets at the bottom of Mount Sharp also indicate an accumulation of sediment from ancient ponds billions of years ago. But this latest disclosure helps decorate an image of what Mars once looked like.
“If these are indeed silt fissures, they fit well with the context of what we’re receiving in the section of Mount Sharp Curiosity has been climbing for numerous months, ” suggested Curiosity Project Scientist Ashwin Vasavada of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California. “The ancient ponds run in depth and range over period, and sometimes vanished. We’re discovering more evidence of dry intervals between exactly what they been mostly a record of long-lived lakes.”

In the epitomes, the crannies appear to be raised banks above the soil. The conclude for this is that they likely modelled 3 billion years ago, before being implanted by blankets of sediment. As gust gnawn those strata, substance in the rifts refused the erosionand were left protruding from the field. This crack-filling textile was likely a mixture of windblown dust and sand, and minerals delivered by groundwater such as calcium sulfate.
The extent to seeing how much liquid Mars had is still up for conversation. Some think it was once covered in a enormous ocean, with more sea than the Arctic Ocean. Other research advocates it went through multiple brief wet seasons.
As for Curiosity, it is continuing to head up Mount Sharp. It has not been able to use its drill recently, after experiencing a number of problems moving it up and down last month, but scientists are hoping to resume drilling interesting targets soon.
