Melania who? Trump’s wife a forgotten recognition in Slovenian residence city

Sevnica residents could not recall much about Melanija Knavs and did not seem to follow her changeover from working-class daughter to possible US first lady

The mayor of Melania Trumps hometown is embarrassed.

At 47, Sreko Ocvirk is just a year older than “the worlds” most famous Slovenian. But even though he was a schoolmate of hers, the mayor of Sevnica enunciated: I have to be honest, I cannot place her. In those daylights, Sevnica primary school had a lot of pupils, he lent sheepishly.

Born in 1970 to a textile work and a auto saves broker, Melania Trump has lived a life estimate by what is known of it that could be romanced into that of a phoenix risen from the spewing smokestacks of Titos Yugoslavia. But the Trump campaign has opted not to go down that route.

On a tour of Sevnica, a pretty medieval city that grasps to vine-clad mounds emerge from the Sava river, these votes in quickly becomes clear that the young Melanija Knavs did not stand out from the collective consciousness of the time as someone who would rise to global fame.

In the socialist eras we were all the same, supposed a woman in the same age bracket as the 46 -year-old.

By contrast, other inhabitants can seem to realize too much of an effort to recall her teenager. At the Rondo Pizzeria, a couple of diners seem suspiciously knowledgeable about the belief early knitting abilities of Trumps future wife. At world markets, a tomato seller referred Matej added Melanija wrap her schoolbooks with sheets snapped from Italian fashion magazines simply to confess that he learnt that detail from a recent television report.

Not only are clues sparse as to Melanias transformation from framework to the Republican presidential candidates third spouse, but few occupants seem to hold strong minds about her life, her migration status or the libel litigations pending over her remarks to her pre-Trump past. No one in Sevnica can even show the oft-reported delicacy that Melanijas maternal grandfather developed a red onion diversity, the Raka.

Sevnica was very different in the 1970 s, alleged Ocvirk. It was a young city, made up of beings moving in from the rural areas.

They labor in large numbers at two or three mills, mainly building clothes and shoes. They patronized in Italy and Austria and tried to achieve the living standards of those countries, said the mayor, a Sevnica-born agricultural architect who was elected eight years ago.

Among the incomers who improve the towns industrial basi were Viktor and Amalija Knavs and their daughters Ines and Melanija. Businessman Viktor dealt in autoes or spare parts or both no one seems quite sure. Amalija was a structure cutter at the Jutranjka childrenswear factory and may at some time have gained a promotion to blueprint designer.

They lived in a five-storey block in the Naselje Heroja Maroka area. Later, Melanija and her older sister went to senior high school in Ljubljana, 60 miles back, and their parents constructed themselves a grey villa in the reasonably mounds above the town, far away from the hourly clatter-past of the teach. They still own the house but are rarely there, living instead in New York and facilitating look after Donald and Melanias son, Barron.

The block where Melania formerly lived has been coated in mellowed peach atmospheres. The clambering frame in the playground is Lego dark-green. The splashings of colouring are townscape trademarks of center European countries such as Slovenia that received improvement funds after to intervene in the EU in 2004. Even the school bears no similarity to the one Melania accompanied. With EU stores, it was rebuilt last year, to the harassment of seeing television gangs determined to see her locker.

Trainee nanny Drita Mustafai, 21, knows nothing about Melania Trump, but supposes she can only be a good thing for Sevnica. It is a lovely city which deserves more tourists.

Mustafai helps out at her father-gods ice-cream stand and works in a hotel to promotion pay for her contemplates, and hopes to move to Germany when she graduates, because wages are better.

Among Sevnicas 5,000 -population, unemployment is 10.3% roughly “the member states national” average. Jutranjka, where Amalija Knavs cultivated, exist anymore. Lisca, a lingerie brand named after the neighbourhood mountain, exists, along with a shoe plant and a furniture fellowship. But they apply fewer than 1,000 beings between them. Numerous inhabitants drive more than an hour to the capital Ljubljana to work.

Asked what Donald Trump could do for his wifes residence town, Ocvirk ruled out a skyscraper as unsuited to our natural elegance. Instead, with a sweeping limb push reminiscent of a Trump Tower escalator, he suggested a golfing and angling composite, encompassing from the hills to the Sava river.
