Last-place time he nearly died in a snowboarding coincidence. Now he’s prevailed copper at the Olympics

( CNN) Eleven months ago Mark McMorris lay waiting for a save helicopter in the backcountry near Whistler, British Columbia, with a fractured mouth, a ruptured spleen, internal bleeding, multiple ruined bones and a collapsed lung.

But on Sunday, a beaming McMorris stood proudly on the Olympic podium after acquiring the copper medal in men’s snowboard slopestyle.

The Regina native had an impressive showing in the event, in which snowboarders must steer a route filled with railings and jumps. He was contributing the pack until the third and final move, when Team USA’s Red Gerard drew off a distressing upset to acquire gold.
