The annual report, published by the American College of Sports Medicine , quantifies health and fitness heights in 50 of the country’s major metropolitan areas. Researchers rank the cities by looking at obesity, smoking and diabetes frequencies, as well as better access to healthy environmental factors, such as farmers markets, parks and recreational facilities.

Overall, the U.S. has experienced a shift toward healthier lives since last year’s report. The quantity of people smoking discontinued 4.7 percent, the number of diabetes-related demises discontinued 7.4 percentage, and twice as many commonwealths had policies that required academies to learn physical education.

The investigates likewise found that the policies and physical layout of a city can determine how health its tenants will be.

“Cities with a built-in environ that supports people who want to be healthy, generally have a healthier person, ” Walter Thompson, prof of kinesiology and health at Georgia State University and AFI advisory board member, told The Huffington Post.

“Cities that fall on the low-spirited intention of our higher-rankings have the opposite of that, ” he included. “They don’t have the same number of ballparks, their metropolis aren’t walkable, or they don’t spend just as much fund[ insisting] their parks.”

D.C ., for example, invests $346 per inhabitant on park-related payments, and 96.3 percentage of occupants live within a 10 -minute foot to a common. Compare that to the report’s lowest ranking metropolitan, Indianapolis, which merely invests $24 per resident on park upkeep and has only 31.6 percentage of the national population living near a park.

The American College of Sports Medicine embarked was published AFI report in 2008 so policy makers could see what the country’s fittest metropolis are doing differently and use that message in their own municipality planning.

The organization publicizes the report with a downloadable Community Action Guide so that community leaders and residents can stir significant changes in their municipality and boost public health initiatives.

Thompson says that residents in metropolitans like Charlotte — which has moved up from No. 43 in 2014 to No. 39 in 2016 — have applied the AFI guide to induce change.

“A few years ago, the people of Charlotte wanted to see more farmers marketplaces, ” Thompson told Huffpost. So some grassroots societies added together and are “now a potent tone to the city and to the mayor. They are demanding change and the mayor’s listening.”
